Every year we have at least one instance of someone digging into a natural gas line because they did not call 811 to have their utility lines marked. It is a free service to have all the utilities on your property marked so you know where it is safe to dig. Calling 811 before you dig is the law in Virginia.
Whether putting in a new drain for your downspouts, installing a sprinkler system, putting up a fence, or even planting a tree; you must call 811 to have your utilities marked. If you are paying someone to do the work for you, don't assume they will automatically call 811. We have responded to excavation damage by contractors that knew they were supposed to call, and have called in the past, but for whatever reason thought they didn't need to this time. Excavation damage is very dangerous and very expensive.
Utility lines show up in the most unexpected places. Never assume they are deeper than you will be digging. If you have questions about 811, please call our office at 276-632-5662. Do not let anyone dig on your property unless you know they have called 811 and had all of your utilities marked. The safety and comfort of your family and your community depend on it!
